A knitting machine is used to produce knitted fabrics and clothes on a fixed bed of hooked needles. A knitting machine is made of a needle bed, a carriage and yarn guides but it may have other attachments as well. Latchet hooks hold the stitches.

Domestic & Industrial -

They can be hand powered or motor assisted. There are also domestic and industrial models of knitting machines. The domestic knitting machines produce a fabric that looks handmade because they use the weft knitting method. It is obviously easier to knit using a knitting machine and a lot faster because knitting machines make an entire row of loops in a single movement. Another reason for using knitting machines is that the fabric made with a machine looks better in many instances than the hand-knitted fabric, the latter having large areas of plain stocking stitch. Finally ,you do not have to be a professional knitter to make wonderful clothes because many machines are fairly simple to operate and it can be a great way to begin to knit .

However, you must not confuse knitting machines with sewing machines. A knitting machine is more complicated- it has springs, buttons, wires and hooks

and most Importantly you need to realize you have to use machine-knitting books to get the pattern you want because hand knitting books can’t be used with a machine as they are not compatible.

Different Machines -

A Bulky size machine is used for making heavy sweaters because the distance between the needles is 9 mm and the hook is large enough and there is no risk of splitting the yarn.For machine knitting with lace the machine needs to be used as manual or semi-manual.

The smallest yarns you can use when knitting with this machine are Sport and DK weight yarns . Some of the techniques you can undertake on this machine are: tuck, slip, intarsia, weaving, and many others.

On the standard bed machine you can make knitted suits and lace curtains. The distance between the needles is 4.5 mm and the hook/latches are much smaller. The lace is automatic. You can do fair isle, tuck, slip, manual cables and others. Baby weight is the most popular weight used for this machine. DK weight is the largest yarn that can be knit with this knitting machine. The Standard 200 can knit very fine yarns , up to a sport weight.

The Silver Reed Gauge SK830(3.6 mm) is a machine used for fine yarns. It is perfect when knitted in an open and loose fabric and light and airy fabric. Knit at tension 5 or 7 and use 2 or 3 strands together.

For the Hand Knitted Look -

If you want to have garments that look and feel more like the hand-knitted garments you should buy a mid-gauge knitting machine.

Knitting with a machine is straightforward but you need to consider when using a machine the patterns, many are not easily inter-changeable between machines, some are but It is hard but not impossible, but is probably best left until you’ve had a little experience of using a knitting machine as you have to spend a lot of time calculating, multiplying and dividing to modify the pattern.

I paid $99 for a Ryobi RY30530 string trimmer at Home Depot. The main reason I picked it was that I didn’t want a wimpy electric model and the top of the line trimmers were more than I wanted to pay.

There were 5 or 6 parts to assemble but it was easy and I didn’t need to use the instruction book. It started easily and it worked fine for about five minutes when the “bump head” quit working. I took it apart and the tangle of string was not going to be an easy fix. Luckily the trimmer came with a free fixed line trim head. I put that on and was back in business a few minutes later. The string is very easy to insert in the fixed line head. If you get this trimmer, do yourself a favor and put the bump head straight into the garbage and install the fixed line head.

I selected the curved shaft model and the shaft was a little short for me. The 30 cc 2 cycle engine is certainly powerfull enough for home use. It has always started easily for me. The engine is louder than my previous model and it hurt my ears on full speed. The power and noise of this trimmer makes ear and eye protection essential. I have ignored safety precautions with less powerful trimmers but I wouldn’t do that with this machine. The plastic where the shaft meets the motor gets very hot and gave my arm a mild burn. The directions say not to squeeze the trigger when starting the engine, but that is the only way I could get it to start when it is hot. This is not a problem when you know the trick.

There is an option to add attachments like a blower, edger, and cultivator; however I have not tried these yet.

Overall the Ryobi RY30530 is a fair value for the money. I am going to be careful not to burn my arm on the motor attachment point. I wish Robi would make the engine quieter and the shaft a few inches longer. I would probably get the straight shaft if I got another one of these.

2. Pre-wash the textile separately. Be convinced that the colors are fast and textile do not shorten. Then well dry the textile & Iron it later including the sprinkle starch. Be attentive that the textile be completely dry & dense with out wrinkles.

3. As the pieces joined do batting, quilting in the common way as you’d desire for other quilts.

4. Join the quilt around to make it attractive; you can also use silk ribbons around the binding.

Lanyards or neck lanyards are designed to carry a small object around the neck while keeping the hands free. They are comprised of one large loop to fit over ones head and a small loop at the bottom for the object attaching hardware. They are typically used for holding id cards, but more uses are cropping up everyday from keys and cell phones to lip balm and mp3 players. Here I discuss all the essential ingredients which go into making lanyards from material and hardware selection to lanyard making instruction and the machinery used to put them together.

Material for making neck lanyards varies from a simple cord or beaded chain to 1.0” wide flat synthetic or cotton webbing. The most common cut length for a lanyard is 36” when measured end to end. The finished size (after the loops are formed) is approximately 17”. Cotton and nylon lanyard cord material is 1/8” to 3/16” in diameter and available in a wide variety of colors. Beaded chain is available in metal as well as plastic. Nickel plated brass ball chain is by far the most popular for id cards. The most common ball size for beaded chain is 0.12” diameter with an overall chain length 24” to 30”. Both cord lanyards and ball chains fall into the lanyard sub-category known as blank lanyards (non-imprinted) and are among the least expensive lanyards available. For custom printed lanyards flat cotton, nylon and polyester are the most common. The most popular material widths for printing range from 3/8” to ޔ. Wider materials allow for more robust imprints as well as better resolved logos. Material selection for printing will depend on the printing process being used. Cotton and nylon are most commonly used for screen printed lanyards, whereas, polyester material is required for both hot stamping and dye sublimation. Lanyard hardware selection will depend on the intended use of the lanyard. For id cards and name badge holders the two most common pieces of hardware are snaphooks and bulldog clips. Snaphooks are also used for attaching many different kinds of objects from pens and lip balm to cell phones and whistles. A snaphook is a “tear drop” shaped piece of metal or plastic hardware which stays closed due to the tension in the material. They bend open by applying side pressure and spring closed when released. Bulldog clips are manufactured specifically for attaching id cards and id holders with oblong holes punched out of the top. They are spring loaded and open like jaws when the end is squeezed and close when released. For attaching keys, lanyards are made with split ring hardware. Familiar to everyone they consist of a coiled wire for snaking keys on and off the ring. Solid o-rings are used when the id card and name badge holders incorporate a bulldog clip. In this case the bulldog clip (and id holder) is attached directly to the o-ring. Lanyard water bottle holders are becoming more popular as people learn more about the health benefits of proper hydration. The most common water bottle holding attachment hardware is a rubber o-ring which can be stretched around the neck of standard pint and liter plastic water bottles.

In addition to object attaching lanyard hardware, there is also “inline” lanyard hardware which adds additional functionality as well as safety features to the lanyard. Center push and side squeeze buckles (similar to those used on backpacks) are used at the bottom of lanyards allowing the release of a lower lanyard segment containing the lanyard hardware and attached small object. Such release or quick-release features allow for the convenient use of the object without having to remove the lanyard from around the neck i.e. keys, id cards, cell phones etc. Increased personal safety concerns have dictated the use of breakaway connectors for lanyards being used in schools, offices, hospitals and other places where lanyards can get snagged, caught or pulled. These breakaway or “safety” connectors are comprised of a pair female and male parts are installed in line (either in front or behind the neck) with the lanyard material and come apart when enough force is applied. They are easily reconnected for continued use of the lanyard. Breakaway connectors are available for cord as well as flat lanyard material in all widths.

The method used for producing lanyards depends for the most part on the material being used. For cord and soft ribbon-like materials such as light weight polyester and cotton, the two lanyard loops are formed by squeezing a metal crimp on to the material with the two ends meeting inside the crimp. For most woven nylon webbing material from 3/8” to 1.0” the loops are formed by stitching the overlapping two ends together using a specialized sewing machine. More recently molded plastic connectors have been developed for forming the main lanyard loop which does not require specialized machinery. These plastic connectors secure the cut ends of the material and also allow for the incorporation of a variety of object attaching hardware from snaphooks and bulldog clips to o-rings and water bottle holders.

Machinery for making lanyards ranges from light to heavy-duty and from manual to automatic. For large scale light weight and “soft” lanyard material production a foot press fitted with metal stamping dies to hold and form a metal crimp is usually necessary. Lanyards made heavier material, such as, nylon webbing use either a dedicated industrial bar tack machine or a more modern computer controlled machine capable of stitching a variety of different patterns selected from a user operated control panel. Both types of machines are capable of varying the length of the stitch across the material which is important for materials of different widths.

So you have decided to take up quilting? Quilting can be a fun and exciting adventure. As with any adventure, however, it is best to be very prepared in order to avoid any unpleasant occurrences. I am going to give you some basic tips to get you started in the right direction.

For this article I am going to be referring to quilting by machine piecing the blocks for your quilt. The tools you have are very important.

You will need a sewing machine that is dependable and can sew a straight stitch. You don’t really need a fancy machine with all sorts of “bells and whistles”, but you do need a machine that is in good running order. I recommend purchasing the machine from a store that specializes in sewing machines. They will offer classes on how to use the machine and they will be able to service the machine. For your machine, you will need some special “feet”. I recommend that you have a 1/4 inch foot attachment. This foot attachment will keep your seams accurate. This is extremely important when you are piecing a quilt. I also recommend that you have a “walking foot”. This foot attachment will keep all of the layers of your quilt together when you are doing the actual quilting and binding.

When buying the fabric for your quilt, always purchase 100% cotton fabric. It is best to purchase a good quality fabric as well. You can always find good quality fabric at your local quilt store. Pre-wash your fabric when you get it home to remove any sizing that is in the fabric. By pre-washing the fabric, you will also set the colors so that they won’t “bleed” during future washing. You may want to use some white vinegar in the wash or purchase a product called “Retaine” to set the colors.

Cutting the fabric into the pieces you will be using for the blocks is very important as well. Proper tools for cutting fabric are available at your local quilt store or most stores that sell fabric and craft supplies. You will need a cutting mat, a rotary cutter, and a ruler. There are many different brands on the market. I have some that I really like best. I use a Martelli mat and rotary cutter. Their mats are double sided so you get double the mat for your money. Their rotary cutters come in various sizes and they also come in right and left handed versions. They are truly ergonomic to reduce stress and strain to your hand and wrist. My rulers are made by Omnigrid. I recommend an 8-1/2 inch x 24 inch ruler. It is best to look at several brands before you purchase any of these tools.

Good lighting is essential when sewing. Sewing machines will have a light built in to the machine, but this is really not enough. You should have another light source that can shed light onto the fabric and needle as you are sewing. There are many different bulbs and lighting fixtures available. I recommend an energy efficient bulb that is easy on the eyes. Ott lights are available in many different sizes and shapes.

You may have noticed that I mentioned “your local quilt store” several times. A local quilt store is an invaluable resource for you. Classes are usually offered and I highly recommend a beginner quilting class. You will also find employees who are experts in the quilting field and can give you “free” advice and help. They are passionate about quilting and love to share their passion with you. The fabric and tools you will find at the quilt store are high quality. The best thing about the quilt store is the wonderful friendships you will make there!

1. An important factor when you start to evaluate and compare embroidery machines is to make sure that you know what you want to do with it. The reason why this is important is because certain embroidery machines are better at certain things. If you don’t know if you want to embroider on caps, for example, how will you know if you should purchase a machine with a cap driver instead of a cap attachment? One works well if you occasionally want to embroider caps. The other is essential if you intend to embroider caps frequently. Know before you buy, and you can avoid running the risk of not being able to do the embroidery that you want to do. You will also want to know the largest size of the designs that you intend to embroider. The size of the area to which you can add embroidery is called the sewing field. Get an embroidery machine with a sewing field that is large enough for the designs you want to create.

2. Another important consideration when buying an embroidery machine is deciding where you plan to use your machine. It’s critical that you determine where you have space that can be dedicated to your embroidery machine permanently. Some machines are the size of a microwave (home embroidery machines) and some machines take about as much room as a refrigerator (some commercial embroidery machines) and some machines are large enough to fill an entire wall (multi-head commercial embroidery machines). Once the machine is set up and running well, it is frustrating to have to move it to make room to eat dinner, have company for the weekend, or use that part of your home for other purposes on a regular basis. If you can dedicate the space to your embroidery machine on a more permanent basis, you will enjoy the machine more and be able to do more with it.

3. Instead of complicating what you need to get when you buy an embroidery machine, simplify the process by getting a basic level of the embroidery software. You need to be able to create lettering, do basic editing and combine designs. Most basic software applications offer these features as well as many others. Use the basic software for a while and then once you become more comfortable with it, you can upgrade. In fact, when you buy the basic level of embroidery software, you often will find that most of the companies count your original purchase towards an upgrade, so that you only have to pay the difference to move to the higher level of embroidery software, when you are ready to move up.

4. You don’t have to be able to digitize designs to fully explore your creativity with your embroidery machine. There are literally thousands of stock (already ready) designs available to you, which you can purchase individually, in small groups or in collections. There are also highly skilled digitizing experts that you can contact to create complicated designs, freeing you up to spend your time actually creating the embroidery. All you need to do is to become comfortable with the embroidery software to the degree that you want and then connect with experts to take on the more complicated designs, at least until you are ready to tackle them yourself.

5. Have you considered making money with your embroidery machine? It’s not as difficult as you might think. Many embroidery businesses are started with one good product and one good design idea! Even the home embroidery machines can create quite a lot of embroidery, certainly enough the start a business. If you are buying an embroidery machine specifically to start an embroidery business, seriously consider a commercial embroidery machine. Commercial machines offer a larger sewing area, considerably faster sewing speeds, commercial grade motors and other options that you will find helpful. Come up with a few ideas that you think would work in your community, such as shirts for your local school parents, ideas for a local craft fair or the holiday bazaar. Once you have your machine, make up several samples and show them to your friends and family to see what they think.

I have visited my local Singer dealer and have tried both of these machines. Having a difficult time deciding between the Singer CG590 Commercial Grade and the Singer Quantum 9910. Both machines are heavy duty and fit my sewing needs. I've searched for customer reviews for both machines with limited results. Please help me decide which machine to purchase.

Active lifestyle demands dresses made up of such fabrics that give the freedom for easy movement. However, in most of the clothings, elastics are used for making them more workable and flexible with control over their stretchability. Not only garments, elastics are used for sewing projects and other craft projects too. Do you ever wonder why the elastic that you used in your last project does not seem to work with the present sewing project? Why the elastic in your cotton pajama is causing problems while the same elastic in your swim wear is working excellently? In fact, the type of elastics and the fabrics with which they are used plus the sewing methods, all go to contribute in the perfect working of elastics.

Types of Elastics and their Construction

Elastic is a flexible and stretchable narrow fabric made of rubber core which is wrapped in polyester, cotton, nylon or a blend of fiber threads. These exterior fibers are braided, woven or knit together to give various thicknesses and widths to the elastics. Most of the elastics are 1/8 inches to 2 ½ inches wide. However, elastic thread can be much narrower and the decorative elastic waistbands can be extra wide. Different elastics have different degrees of stretchability. Elastics are sewn to fabrics in two ways- direct application and casing. In the first method, elastic is attached to fabric by sewing directly through the elastic and fabric. In the second method, the elastic is encased into a closed tunnel like fabric and then sewed to the fabric often around the waist, at the neckline or lower edge of a sleeve or pant leg.

Braided elastics are used in casings as they get narrowed when stretched. They can not retain their stretch and shape if applied directly to the fabric. These light weight elastics are mainly used on sleeve hems, swim wear and leg bands. Braided non-roll elastic is appropriate for waistbands because they can remain flat when stretched.

Knitted elastics are soft, light weight, strong and appropriate for directly applying on almost any kind of garment. These elastics can also be sewed in casing. They are best for lightweight fabrics. Many knitted elastics also have sewing line at their edges which do not have elastic in them. So, it becomes much easier to sew these elastics to a garment.

Woven elastics, usually thicker than the other elastics, are very strong. When sewn directly onto a fabric, they can retain their width and stretch. Woven elastics can also be sewed in casing. They are usually applied to heavy weight fabrics, such as home furnishings, car covers, bags, accessories, etc.

Transparent or clear elastics are synthetic narrow fabrics that can stretch up to four times their length and can completely recover the original size and shape. They are made of polyurethane and does not contain rubber which makes them appropriate to be used in kids garments or for people who are allergic to latex. It is primarily used in those areas that are prone to lose stretch, such as shirt bottoms, shoulder seams and necklines. They can’t be used in casings as they’ll roll over themselves.

Tips for Sewing Elastics

• Choose an elastic that has the same care requirements as the finished garment.
• Use those elastics which recover their original length after stretching.
• Use cotton elastic with cotton garments. Wash the cotton fabric before sewing as the elastic will also shrink a little when washed.
• Use nylon elastic for lingerie and swim wear. They can be machine washed but dry them in medium heat.
• Polyester elastics go with almost all fabrics. They can be washed as well as dry cleaned.
• Choose such threads that are compatible with fabric.
• Use a ball-point needle when sewing.
• Adjust the thread tension when stitching and stretching elastic.
• Elastic should be tight enough to prevent fabric from drooping, but loose enough to be comfortable.
• Cut the elastic according to the required length plus 1 inch for finishing the ends.
• When applying elastic directly to fabric, cut it about 8% shorter than the required length. It will stretch during sewing.
• Use a long straight stitch or a zigzag stitch when sewing the elastic directly to fabric. A long stitch having length of three or four is best for most of the fabrics and elastic types.
• If doing too much work with elastic, consider buying specialty presser foot/machine attachment that applies elastic without having to stretch it by hand.

There are many brands of embroidery machines. There are machines designed for commercial use like those made by Tashima and Happy. There are smaller units made for home use by well knows sewing machine companies like Janome and Babylock.

In the arena of home embroidery machines, there are stand alone embroidery machines and there are combination or combo embroidery machines. These combo machines are world class sewing machines with exotic embroidery features added.

To reduce this feeling of intimidation, take another look at your embroidery machine. Isn’t the embroidery machine basically a straight stitch sewing machine? Sure, it is. When you reduce the operation of the machine down to its most basic level, the machine is a computer controlled straight stitch sewing machine that uses a moving hoop to position stitches. Change the needle mechanism being uses and you have another straight stitch sewing machine.

When you think of your embroidery machine as a single stitch sewing machine, you can treat it the same way as you would a single stitch sewing machine.

The biggest problem facing your embroidery machine is the same as any single stitch sewing machine. Dirt, grit, gunk, lint, dried out and crystallized lubricants, and neglect are the biggest causes of problems.

The embroidery machine user should focus on servicing three areas of their machine: the bobbin area, each needle bar area, and the hoop assembly.

Use a small brush and probe as needed to loosen debris. Use an air compressor, canned air, or a vacuum with special attachments to properly remove loose debris. Every three to four hours of sewing, clean these areas of your machine. Once clean place one drop of pure clean sewing machine oil wherever metal parts touch metal.

Replace needles frequently. Regular embroidery needles are good for about four hours of use, but titanium embroidery needles usually last three to five times as long. Dull, bent, and worn needles do not perform as they should.

When push comes to shove, rely on the experts. It is vital that you maintain your equipment in peak condition at all times, but at least once a year or ever 10,000,000 stitches have the experts provide thorough service. If the machine just wont work, rely on the pros.
